Violence and Nutrition: A Historical Synopsis of Associations and Their Influence on Nutrition Equity

Dr. Chelsea R. Singleton is an assistant professor in the Department of Social, Behavioral, and Population Sciences at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM). She received an MPH in epidemiology from Tulane SPHTM in 2011 and a Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2015. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the Institute for Health Research and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2018. The overarching objective of Dr. Singleton’s research is to describe and dismantle structural barriers to healthy eating among low-income populations and people of color in the U.S. In 2020, she was awarded an NIH K01 grant to evaluate the impact of community violence on healthy food access and food purchasing behavior in low-income African American communities. To date, the United States Department of Agriculture, National Cancer Institute, and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities have funded her research.
