Considering child development in Indian Country: A look with the Cherokee Indians

Dr. Adam J. Hoffman will be presenting his research that examines child development in Indian Country. Specifically, he will provide insights on the role of ethnic-racial and gender identities in the lives of Native American adolescents. Dr. Hoffman will show how the context can shape these identities but also their potential to be leveraged as cultural assets to enhance their well-being and motivation.

Dr. Hoffman is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Cornell University. He investigates the development of social identities (e.g., ethnic-racial or gender identity) among adolescents, their implications for academic achievement, motivation, and mental health and well-being, and ways social identities can be leveraged to enhance academic and psychosocial outcomes. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Quinnipiac University and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then completed two postdocs, the first in the Department of Psychology and School of Education at the University of Michigan and the second in the Department of Psychology at North Carolina State University.
