Talks at Twelve: Promoting Pro-Environmental Engagement Across the Lifespan

This Talks at Twelve features Tim Mateer, assistant director for the Program for Research on Youth Development and Engagement (PRYDE). Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees.
This talk will explore the impact of environmental education and awareness programs on individuals across the lifespan. This work examines the social and psychological mechanisms that lead to pro-environmental behavior for individuals participating in these programs, with a specific focus on identity-related outcomes. The translational implications of this research will also be discussed. Specific connections will be made between research results and actions programs can take to improve the pro-environmental engagement of their participants, with unique considerations for where program participants are within the life course. Partnerships with organizations such Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, the Leave No Trace Center and Elders Climate Action will be highlighted.
Tim Mateer received a dual Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University in human dimensions of natural resources and the environment and recreation, park and tourism management.
